Leif has ben home from work for 14 days soon, We thoaght it might be a flue, but the doctore said no. Leif is very dissy and cant walk more than a few meters, so i have to do all the shopping and carry all our garbage alone. He cant do much. He is seing a specialist tuesday. I think i have found the right accessories to the Polonaise dress. Some lovely small roses and the rococo ribbon for edging all the rutchings. I am still sewing on the stays, takes forever. But i am looking forwards to getting it finnished, so that i can start making the polonaise dress for Julie.

| wool needle |
[Nov. 26th, 2009|05:42 pm] |
Hey, just to inform you, that i just found what i was after. Its because they dont call it a bodkin, they call it a wool needle. http://www.cchobby.dk/product/11868-4481-205145/Uldn%C3%A5l-3-stk-ass.html These are perfect for lacing in stays and clothing. Now i have spoiled the stays i am making because they are going to have laceholes 6 mm. wide, just so that i could use the bodkins from Boothdraper. And by the way, Boothdraper made an error, not to critisism his produkts, they usually are very fine, but they say that they are 3 mm. at their widest point, wich is not true, they are 6 mm. Grumble grumble.............

| Bodkin problems again |
[Nov. 26th, 2009|03:13 pm] |
As i could not get the bodkins i used to, i ordered 20 bone bodkins at boothdraper. They arrived a coupple of days ago. But hey, they are way two big. You have to make huge holes to let them pass, and i am used to make much smaller lacing holes. Why do i have to have so manny problems with this issue? Well i am going to use them, and as such are making the holes bigger in the stays i make now, but really i think they are two big. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. |

| Old costume i made for a masquerade in Venice |
[Nov. 23rd, 2009|03:10 pm] |
A friend sended a nice photo today of a dress i made for his wife some years ago for a masqued ball in Venice. Some of you may have seen it before, but the picture was so nice and it was a fun picture to get, because the little girl you see in the photo were in her stomacher when she got the dress:
The dress was made from silk taffeta, and the puffings were trimmed with goldlace i had made myself. All the gold tassels were made by hand two. |

| Sofies new dress. |
[Nov. 22nd, 2009|01:23 pm] |
Got some pictures today from Sofie. The weather was dark so she had to use flash, but the pictures are taken at Gammel Estrup. No hairdo and no makeup, there wasnt time.

It was her sister who dressed her, but she didnt do it right, the stomacher is placed two high, and she didnt pull the two frontparts down enough. She laced it two tight in the waist, it should be more open, but anyway nice picture i think. |

| Antiques show at Gammel Estrup |
[Nov. 21st, 2009|09:31 pm] |
If you dont have anything better to do, i would recomend you to se a danish tv show about all the goodies they have at Gammel Estrup. The young man who is talking trough the show is the person who would have ben the owner today, if not all the things were sold back in 1926. His family has lived at Gammel Estrup for more than 600 years. There is a glimse of my grey court dress and you can also see the green curtains i made for the big hall......... http://www.dr.dk/DR1/Hvaderdetvaerd/seprogrammerne.htm

| Gammel Estrup |
[Nov. 18th, 2009|09:13 pm] |
It was such a shame i nearly missed a tv show from Gammel Estrup. The program is a kind of antiques road show. A man wihc is in the familly who owned Gammel Estrup for gennerations (not anymore) was telling about the old mannor. One of the fine things they showed were 12 wine glasses with monograms of the Scheel familly made in Norway 1750 wich were danish in those days, Nøstetangen glasses. An expert estimated their vallue to be more than 1/4 million danish crowns. But one of the good things about it is that it gets on the internet tomorrow, the program so i can see it from the start. We have a very severe storm today. Its right towards our windows, and its frightening because our windows are big, and they could break. I hope not. I went to work today and i felt that a migraine attach was on its way, so when i got home i ate a pill and took a nap. Now its gone, and i am fresh again. But not much sewing today i am afraid.

| Stays |
[Nov. 17th, 2009|09:32 pm] |
Pewh! I have worked hard for 12 hours on the stays for Julie today. The silver rose fabric arrived yesterday, and the pale pink taffeta i had planned for the stays, didnt match the silver rose fabric. Therefore i desided to make it in the sellery green taffeta wich i made my silver spangled waistcoat of for the stays. Even that it does not matter because the stays cant be seen, i want it to look pretty. I drafted the pattern yesterday and today i spended some hours in drawing in the channels very precisely. And i started to sew some channels two, enourmous work when all the threads has to be sewn in in the back. So what i got made today, to have all the parts ready for sewing channels and also got the whole right frontpiece channel stitched.

| polonaise dress stays |
[Nov. 16th, 2009|02:10 pm] |
I worked all weekend at my job. So i am very happy to have this day and tomorrow free! And starting the new projekt, pink polonaise. I desided to make new stays for Julie. She tryed on another pair of stays i had made, and i could rewamp these by altering the backs, but i desided to make a compleatly new pair of stays for her. Found a pale pink silk taffeta i want to use for these stays.(The polonaise is going to be pink two) Then i looked at old stays and i found out one i like wich has partially lacing at the front as decoration. Only half way down its laced and sewn together at the bottom. I figured out i could do this by overhanding the fronts. My only concern is how to avoid the stress the stays would have from the part where its decorated with lacing and the part where its sewn together, but i guess the lace tapes helps to keep the stress in order here. Anyway its the first time i try to make such a pair of stays. As a pattern for these stays i am going to use Norah Waughs 1780ies stays wich only are partially boned, but i have seen manny examples of this type fully boned, and i love fully boned stays, so its going to be that. Right now i have drawn the bones for the front parts, and i am going on with the rest for the stays parts today. I am going to use 7 mm. boning Julie was like elastic to lace on, so its going to be a dream to have her laced in this shape. I think this is the type of stays that the Duchesse of Devonshire is telling about in a letter: MY DEAR LOUISA, YOU WILL LAUGH WHEN I TELL YOU, THAT POOR WINIFRED, WHO WAS REDUCED TO BE MY GENTLEWOMANS GENTLEWOMAN, BROKE TWO LACES IN ENDEAVOURING TO DRAW MY NEW FRENCH STAYS CLOSE. YOU KNOW I AM NATURALLY SMALL AT BOTTOM BUT NOW YOU MIGHT LITTERALLY SPAN ME. YOU NEVER SAW SUCH A DOLL. THEN, THEY ARE SO INTOLERABLY WIDE ACROSS THE BREASTS, THAT MY ARMS ARE ABSOLUTELY SORE WITH THEM AND MY SIDES SO PINCHED!- BUT IT IS THE "TON"; AND PRIDE FEELS NO PAIN. IT IS WITH THESE SENTIMENTS THE LADIES OF THE PRESENT AGE HEAL THEIR WOUNDS; TO BE ADMIRED, IS A SUFFICIENT BALSAM. GEORGIANA CAVENDISH, DUCHESSE OF DEVONSHIRE. These stays are very wide at the bossom and the back very narrow, so i think Georgianas shoulders was pushed very hard back, and this is why she suffered in her arms. |

| Sofies new dress. |
[Nov. 10th, 2009|02:52 pm] |
I only need to sew in the threads from the stomacher bone channels. Then i am finnished!

I have used nearly 5 meters of ribbon for the lacing of the stomacher. But i like the look of it. It was difficult to find out how i could make a costume where i only had 3 yards for the skirt, and also to find a bodice i could use to it, but i think i managed all right. For this i am also going to make the embroidered stomacher, when i have more time and i also promised to make a small tricornered hat to match it. Its typically of the weather to be dark and dull, when i am going to make pictures, so i had to use flash wich i hate, but there are more pictures here: http://www.my-drewscostumes.dk/b&s1740-45.htm |

[Nov. 8th, 2009|09:12 pm] |
A frien of mine, who is studying old wardrobes finally found a danish letter in Malmø. The first danish word for a bumroll i have ever heard. 1608. Its called pølseliv in danish, wich could be translated to english like "Sausage waist" She also found evidense of wheel farthingale, when she read the wardrobe of Queen Anne Cathrine who married Christian the fourth. She came from germany and had wheel farthingales with her. They were not called wheelfarthingales, but farthingales with hip rolls. Apparently they did have a farthingale wich was so large in the top that it had to be supported by rolls.
I have come this far with Sofies new dress. I sewed on all the ruched trimmings and i am putting the sleaves in right now. So i only need to make the stomacher. Then i am going to make the pink polonaise. But it is going to take some time for the fabric to arrive, i baught it on ebay, and it comes from Hong Kong. In the waiting time, i think i want to make a new corset for the young lady. Although she tryed on the corset, i think the gap was two big in the back, so i am making it bigger. Best to make it propperly.

| finnishing |
[Nov. 7th, 2009|12:43 pm] |
This weekend i am going to finnish the new dress for Sofie. I have sewed the lace frills and the sleavefrills to the sleaves. I need to sew a stomacher, sew the skirt to the bodice and the sleaves to the bodice. Then i am finnished.

The sleaves frills was cut with the cuffs. 3 handsewn gathering threads was made, and the gathers were sewn to the sleaves by hand. Then i removed the gathering threads. I used 0,5 cm. gathering stitches. And the lace frills are made of the exquisite Nottingham Laces off cause.

Its a shame i cant use Sofies stays, but she was in need of them, so i had to photograph without it. I used the stays i had made for Sofie to the red francaise dress. |

| Bodkins anyone? |
[Nov. 6th, 2009|04:51 pm] |
My supplier of bodkins has stopped selling them. I have some of the brand Pony, also called "passe lacets" , Durchziehnadeln, Pasacintas. They are made in India. I was so fond of these, and i always sended a pair of these with the corset, when i made any custom corsets. I have tryed to Google for them, but without any luck. Do you have a supplier of bodkins for lacing stays? Please help me!

| Sofies new dress. |
[Nov. 3rd, 2009|03:18 pm] |
So i mannaged to sew 32 lacing holes, 16 each side, and i laced it with the blue ribbon and pinned some of the blue roses to it. Unfortunately i think that the roses are two small, you dont notice them, and considering i am going to embroider a nice stomacher for it, i think i will make it without the roses. I can use the roses for future doll dresses.

I have to make laundry the rest of today! :-( But next step is the sleaves.

| Marie Antoinettes pink polonaise |
[Nov. 2nd, 2009|04:42 pm] |
For so long i have longed to make the pink polonaise Marie Antoinette is wearing in the movie! It has haunted me. Now i finally found a pink i like:

Using pink for 18th century is very difficult, if you want to find a shade that was used. This one will do i think. This is the projekt i am going to make, when i have finnished Sofies dress. I am sewing a boned foundation into her jacket right now.

Oh yes! i almost forgot. I found this book today, wich i think is translated to english, its the book they are going to film soon, "A royal affair" Its written by Stella Tillyard. A true story, about Caroline Mathilde and Friederich Struensee, who was excecuted because he had an affair with the queen. So all you english readers out there, go and get it, its a real story from 18th century Denmark. |

| Julies corset fitting. |
[Oct. 28th, 2009|09:09 pm] |
Julie tryed on the corset i had ment to be worn by Ann who is going to be the chokolate girl. Julie is a bigger girl, and I think i can use the corset mock up with just a few alterations. She had a huge waist reduction:
I think i want to make the side panels a little bigger, and add some centimeters to the two backs. She is going to use it for an anglaise dress i am going to make her:http://www.my-drewscostumes.dk/1stladyfriend.htm
